From September 1 to 3, the Seestadt Kultur Garage, Am-Strom-Park 18, 1220 Vienna, will host an impressive spectacle with a colourful programme.
It is a colourful cultural offer coming to the Danube City at the beginning of September. From September 1 to 3, the Filipino Diaspora Art and Culture Festival will be held at the Kulturgarage Seestadt for three days.
Under the motto “Evolving Filipino Heritage”, visitors can expect impressive performances, colourful presentations of Filipino culture, exciting workshops and panel discussions, and a taste of the culinary delights of the island nation.
Workshops, Discussions and Singing
Discussions will range from essential topics such as “Disinformation in Journalism and Social Media, Impact on the Youth of the Filipino Diaspora” with special guests Candy Gourlay, Christian Esguerra and Marina Wetzelmaier, moderated by Arlene Castañeda of Sentro, Appreciating Philippine Music: A Sound Journey through OPM from Manila Sound to P-POP” with panellists Zuriel Domingo of the University of the Philippines – Baguio, Carl Anacin of Griffith University, Mark Agpas and Jernalie Dumapay aka Sofia, moderated by Ralph Chan.
There will also be various workshops, such as “Creative Writing for Social Media,” led by Che Ingles and Dexter Matilla. We’ll get insights into the art and history of Filipino tattoo culture from Charmaine Taus, accompanied by live designs from Imelda Perez-Papai and a discussion on community and identity.
The Art and Exhibition Hall will showcase the work of talents such as Harold Khan, Sheree Domingo, Apollo Rey Ikan, and various young artists. Those interested can experience the flavours of the many regional Filipino cuisines and the creative handicrafts of budding entrepreneurs at the PopUp Palengke.
What is KUBŌ?
“KUBŌ is an expression of many conversations, frustrations, and aspirations of so many young people in the community,” says co-founder Gerard Rabara. He felt it was time to try something new: “We’re taking space and saying this is our city too. Our stories are Vienna’s stories. We are Europeans, we are Austrians, and we are Filipinos. We are migrants, and we are natives. We are the future, and we have something to say.
KUBŌ, which stands for Kultur Bayanihan Ōsterreich, was founded in Vienna in 2021 by Gerard Rabara and a group of young Filipino-Austrians led by Arlene Castañeda and Christian Namiss.
